Project Profiles: Pipeline Management

Discover the true condition of your water mains with pipeline condition assessment services from Wachs Water Services.

Wachs Water Services recently completed the inspection of a 60 year old, 24 inch cast iron water main in a major urban center in Canada.  The inspection confirmed that there were no water leaks in the section of pipe, however simulated leaks were identified by the LDS1000™ system.  The inspection was completed with a very low water flow of less than 1 foot per second.  Low flow operation is one of the big advantages of the LDS1000™ system as it is often difficult for utilities to achieve and sustain ideal flows for in-line inspections.

An LDS1000™ operator monitors his control system for the presence of a leak on a newly installed water main that failed a hydrostatic pressure test.  The LDS1000™ system incorporates advanced acoustic noise filter software which can pinpoint leaks as small as 0.004 gpm.  The LDS1000™ sensor can be inserted into the pipeline under "no-flow" conditions using a pull tape or pipe crawler.

In Austin, Wachs Water Services performed a systematic leak survey of over 600 miles of water mains.  In addition to water main leak detection, accurate GPS mapping was completed and the data was integrated into the City's GIS system.

In Nashville, Wachs Water Services acted as subcontractor to Water Systems Optimization, Inc and completed the inspection of over 300 miles of distribution mains for water leaks using advanced digital correlators.

At its headquarters near Chicago, Wachs Water Services designed a water distribution system test rig which can simulate common field operational conditions.  The pressurized test rig incorporates various hydrants, valves, small and large diameter water main segments.  The primary use of the test rig is for operator training/certification and the development of new pipeline inspection technologies.
Wachs Water Services has introduced five new service vehicles specifically designed for pipeline condition assessment projects. The vehicles will be based in hub offices in the United States and Canada. Each vehicle is outfitted with either LDS1000™ or Investigator™ in-line pipeline condition assessment technologies.  Celebrating the launch of the new Pipeline Inspection Vehicle fleet from left to right: Cliff Jones, VP Business Development, Charlie Wachs, Director and Cliff Wilson, President of Wachs Water Services.
