When the ground is covered with a layer of snow, finding valves can take an exorbitant amount of time. Add to that the sense of urgency that comes along with main breaks and suddenly an accurate GIS becomes an indispensable tool. Imagine the time crews save when they can simply find the valve on in their GIS and plug in those coordinates into their mapping tool.
Last winter, one of our clients received more than 15 inches of snow, which would have made searching for valves like searching a needle in a haystack. However, by utilizing the GIS and a metal detector, valves were easily found.
